Staking works by splitting large denominations of coins into two halves. This provides for more coin inputs to continue staking while any new outputs mature (all generated coins must mature, or age, before they can be spent, for security). Thus, this boosts staking efficiency over time, until the Stake Split Threshold is met (default 2000).
For example, you receive 8000 WGR and stake it. It splits into roughly 2x4000.475 (because the block reward is .95). They will split again on the next few stakes, resulting in roughly 4x2000.95. With the default StakeSplitThreshold setting of 2000, the outputs (denominations) will not split anymore, until they reach 4000 again.
Adjusting the Stake Split Threshold thus allows for greater control of your preferred size of coin denominations. Simply set your prefered size lower, for example, if more efficiency is desired.
- If you have a small balances, it is advisable to lower the threshold significantly. This increases your staking efficiency, ensuring some funds are available to continue staking while new outputs mature.
- If you have a large balance, you may want to keep the default setting or slightly lower. This avoids frequently exceeding the maximum transaction byte size (each denomination included — known as an “input” — adds to the size). Approximately 650 inputs maximum can be included.
If you have less than 2000 WGR in your client wallet, you can set the stake split threshold to 500 by the following:
You can find the stake split threshold from the File menu on Settings > Options then Tab across to Wallet.
Then change the default ‘2000’, you can either manually type this in or use the down arrow.
Set this to 500:
Click on OK and the new setting will take effect immediately.
If you run into transaction byte size limit errors in the future, you can adjust the threshold higher.
